Beyond its role as Earth’s navigational star, Polaris is a triple-star system containing a rare Cepheid variable. Astronomers rely on Cepheids as "cosmic yardsticks" to measure the universe, but Polaris Aa is breaking the rules. After its light pulsations mysteriously faded, they began strengthening again—an unpredictable shift that challenges fundamental cosmic theories and how we measure the scale of the universe.
